How to Write a Professional Electrician's Quote

Electrical work is one of the most regulated trades in the UK. Customers expect more than just a price — they want proof you're qualified, compliant, and thorough. A professional written quote is your chance to demonstrate all three before you've even picked up a screwdriver.

What Every Electrician's Quote Should Include

  • Your business details — company name, address, phone, email, and registration numbers (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA, or other Part P scheme)
  • Client details — full name and property address
  • Project description — clear summary such as "Full house rewire" or "Consumer unit upgrade"
  • Detailed scope of work — list every circuit, fitting, and accessory included in the price
  • Itemised costs — break out consumer unit, first fix, second fix, testing, and making good as separate line items
  • VAT — if you're VAT registered, show subtotal, VAT at 20%, and total including VAT
  • Part P compliance — confirm the work will be notified to Building Control and an EICR will be issued
  • Timeline — estimated duration and any access requirements (e.g. property must be vacated during first fix)
  • Payment terms — deposit, stage payments, and when the final balance is due
  • Certification included — state that testing, certification, and Building Control notification are included in the price

Part P Compliance in Your Quotes

Part P of the Building Regulations requires that most electrical work in dwellings is either carried out by a registered competent person or notified to Building Control. As an electrician, you should always state in your quote whether the work falls under Part P and how compliance will be handled.

For notifiable work (rewires, new circuits, consumer unit changes, work in bathrooms/kitchens), your quote should confirm:

  • You are registered with a Part P competent person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT, ELECSA, etc.)
  • The work will be self-certified and notified to Building Control
  • An Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) will be issued on completion
  • The customer will receive a Building Regulations Compliance Certificate

Including this information builds immediate trust. It shows the customer you understand the regulations and they won't be left with uncertified work.

EICR Requirements in Electrician Quotes

An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) should be included in any rewire or major electrical project quote. The EICR confirms the installation is safe, meets current regulations, and identifies any defects. For rewire quotes, make it clear that the EICR is part of the price, not an additional charge.

If you're quoting for an EICR as a standalone job, specify:

  • The number of circuits to be tested
  • Whether the property needs to be vacated during testing
  • How long the testing will take
  • What happens if defects are found (remedial work quoted separately)

Common Electrician Quote Mistakes

The biggest mistake electricians make is not breaking down the cost. "Full rewire - £5,300" tells the customer nothing. They can't see what's included, what consumer unit they're getting, how many sockets per room, or whether testing and certification is in the price.

Other common mistakes include:

  • Not mentioning Part P compliance — this is a legal requirement and customers increasingly ask about it
  • Forgetting making good — chasing walls creates mess, and the customer needs to know who's patching and filling afterwards
  • No mention of testing and certification — always confirm EICR and Building Control notification are included
  • Underestimating first fix time — old properties with lath and plaster take much longer than modern plasterboard
  • Not flagging asbestos risk — in pre-2000 properties, always note that asbestos may be encountered and would be an additional cost

Why Professional Quotes Win More Electrical Work

Homeowners choosing an electrician for a rewire or major project are making a big decision. They want someone qualified, insured, and professional. A detailed PDF quote with your registration numbers, itemised costs, compliance details, and clear payment terms gives them confidence that you're the right person for the job.

Electricians who send professional written quotes consistently win more work and face fewer disputes than those who quote verbally or by text message. The time spent creating a proper quote pays for itself many times over.
