What a guttering quote should include
Roofline quotes go wrong in two predictable places: access and the timber behind the old boards. You are working at height, often on a scaffold or tower, and you cannot see the true state of the fascia and rafter feet until the old uPVC or timber is stripped back. A good guttering quote prices the access and the visible work firmly, and handles the hidden condition of the roofline honestly, so the customer is not surprised and you are not out of pocket.
- Your business and VAT. Trading name, address, contact, and your VAT number if registered.
- The customer and the site. Their name, the property address and the property type, since a terraced or two storey property changes the access.
- The access method. Scaffold, tower or ladders, and how many elevations. On higher or terraced properties access is often the largest single cost.
- A specific scope. Fascias, soffits, bargeboards, guttering and downpipes, whether you are capping over or fully replacing, and the finish.
- Labour and materials. Days by your rate, plus uPVC fascias, soffits, bargeboards, gutter, downpipes, ventilation strips and fixings, priced per linear metre where it helps the customer trust the figure.
- Removal and disposal. Taking down and tipping the old timber or uPVC, with care over any old asbestos-cement gutters or boards.
- VAT. If registered, subtotal, 20% VAT and total. If not, say so.
- Timeline. Days on site, including scaffold up and down where relevant.
- Payment terms. When you expect payment and any deposit against ordered materials.
- Exclusions. Roof tiles, felt, brickwork and decoration are often excluded. Say so clearly.
- Validity period. "Valid for 30 days" so a material price does not follow you around after supplier costs move.

The mistakes that cost roofline installers money on a quote
- Not pricing access. Turning up with ladders when the job needed a scaffold, or leaving the tower off the figure, wipes out the margin fast. Price the access as its own line.
- No variations line for rotten timber. Rotten fascia timber or soft rafter feet behind old boards is common on older properties, and you cannot see it from the ground. Say extras are quoted and agreed before you proceed.
- Capping over when the customer expected full replacement. Cladding new uPVC over sound old timber is cheaper, but full replacement is a different price and a different job. Spell out which you are quoting.
- Careless disposal of old asbestos-cement. Old asbestos-cement gutters and boards need proper handling and disposal, not skipping with the general waste. Price and describe it correctly.
- Confusing a quote with an estimate. A quote is a fixed price. An estimate can move. Label the document as one, never both. See quote vs estimate.
Should a roofline installer send a quote or an estimate?
For a defined job you can measure from the ground, a full fascia, soffit and gutter replacement to an agreed spec, quote it firmly once you have set the access. Where the true condition of the timber behind the old boards is unknown until you strip back, an old property with likely rot, an estimate with a firm quote to follow is the honest approach.
