For UK electricians
Electrician quote template (UK)
A clear layout for an electrical quote that sets out scope, certification, terms and VAT properly, so the customer knows exactly what they are agreeing to.
What an electrician quote should include
An electrical quote carries something most trades do not have to spell out: certification and compliance. The customer is not just buying labour and parts, they are buying a job signed off correctly. A good electrician quote makes that visible.
- Your business and registration. Trading name, address, contact, your competent person scheme registration where you hold one, and your VAT number if registered.
- The customer and the site. Their name and the property address.
- A specific scope. Which circuits, how many points, the consumer unit, and the finish. "Rewire" alone is too broad.
- Labour and materials. Days on site by your rate, plus cable, accessories, the board and any testing equipment time.
- Certification included. State clearly which certificate the price covers, for example an Electrical Installation Certificate or a Minor Works Certificate, and note Building Control notification where it applies.
- VAT. If registered, show subtotal, 20% VAT and total. If not, say so.
- Timeline. Days on site, and whether the power will be off at points.
- Payment terms. When you expect payment, and any stage payment for a larger job.
- Exclusions. Making good, plastering and decoration are often excluded. Say so plainly.
- Validity period. "Valid for 30 days" so a price does not follow you around after copper and accessory costs move.
An electrician quote example
The figures below are illustrative and shown only to demonstrate the layout. They are not market rates. Price every job from your own supplier prices and day rate.
| Section | Detail | Amount (example only) |
|---|---|---|
| Consumer unit | Supply and fit new dual RCD or RCBO board, test and commission | £X |
| Circuits | Rewire ring and lighting circuits, first and second fix | £X |
| Accessories | Sockets, switches, downlights, supply and fit | £X |
| Testing and certification | Inspection, testing and Electrical Installation Certificate | £X |
| Subtotal | £X | |
| VAT (20%, if registered) | £X | |
| Total | £X |
Scope note: "Full rewire of a three bedroom house: X circuits, X points, new consumer unit, first and second fix, tested and certified. Excludes making good, plastering and decoration." Terms note: "Price assumes safe access and sound building fabric. Any additional circuits or remedial work found once walls and floors are opened up will be quoted and agreed in writing before proceeding. Valid for 30 days."
The mistakes that cost electricians money on a quote
- Not naming the certificate. If the customer assumes certification is included and you meant it as an extra, that is a dispute. State it on the quote.
- Vague scope on a rewire. Circuits and points hidden behind the word "rewire" leave room for the customer to expect more than you priced.
- No variations clause. On old wiring you cannot see everything from a socket front. Add a line that extras found on opening up are quoted and agreed before you proceed.
- Confusing a quote with an estimate. A quote is a fixed price. An estimate can move. Label the document as one, never both. See quote vs estimate.
- Forgetting making good. If you are not filling chases or replastering, exclude it clearly so nobody assumes it is in the price.
Should an electrician send a quote or an estimate?
On a job you can fully inspect, a small board change or a defined number of points, send a firm quote. On older installations where the true state of the wiring is hidden until you open up, an estimate with a firm quote to follow is often the honest choice. Either way, put the scope and the variations terms in writing. Our guide to quote vs estimate for UK trades covers when each is fairer.
